Elye Wahi: Nice make effort to keep on-loan midfielder

French Ligue 1 strugglers, OGC Nice are making frantic efforts in a bid sign Ivory Coast midfielder Elye Wahi on permanent basis.

Wahi, who now represents the Ivory Coast national team, has scored four goals, provided one assist in 11 Ligue 1 appearances.

The club’s co-president, Maurice Cohen confirmed their resolve to regularize the deal of the former Olympique Marseille midfielder.

“We would like to keep him. In football, everything is possible.

“He is a very endearing young man,” said Cohen in an interview with Ici Azur.

OG Nice have blown cold this season, collecting a paltry 29 points from 30 matches and seated in 15th, three places above the drop zone.

Wahi, who previously played for Montpellier and Lens, switched allegiance to represent Ivory Coast after representing France at the youth level until the U-23.

In March, Wahi’s request to switch allegiance to Ivory Coast was approved by FIFA.

He has made a single appearance for the Elephants and that came during his debut against Scotland in their 1-0 international friendly win over Scotland on March 31.

After a season defined by experimentation and inconsistency, Kaizer Chiefs finally appear to have found their “engine room” heartbeat. Former Amakhosi legend Jabu Mahlangu believes the club’s recent resurgence is no accident, pointing directly to the blossoming partnership between Lebohang Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

Speaking on the Diski Shandis podcast, Mahlangu noted that the duo has solved a puzzle the technical team struggled with all season.

“Maboe and Ndlovu have stabilised Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield,” Mahlangu explained. “This has allowed Mduduzi Shabalala to be free in that number 10 role. Uvukile [he has woken up] because of that stability in the centre.”

What sets this partnership apart from previous attempts is their natural chemistry. Mahlangu highlighted how the pair balances the “box-to-box” duties that previous combinations, such as Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, lacked.

“They complement each other. When Maboe goes forward, Ndlovu drops. When Ndlovu pushes up, Maboe covers as the sweeper,” Mahlangu added. “The team was struggling so much in the middle. They tried many variations with Ngcobo and Mthethwa, but none of them clicked.”

With the business end of the season in full swing, the timing of this breakthrough couldn’t be better. Beyond their technical quality on the ball, Mahlangu insists that the experience the two former Sundowns men bring has hardened a Chiefs side that previously looked fragile under pressure.

As Shabalala continues to thrive in a more liberated role, the Maboe-Ndlovu partnership is fast becoming the blueprint for the “new” Kaizer Chiefs midfield.
